Main Street Project applauds the Manitoba Government for yesterday’s announcement regarding funding in support of multiple initiatives to support Manitobans seeking safe shelter and affordable housing. This is a historic investment for the shelter sector and for Main Street Project. The funds will directly improve our emergency shelter, transitional housing, and case management programs.
These critical, life-saving programs have been historically underfunded, and we have relied on individual donations to provide these basic services while balancing our budget. This is new funding, but it does not mean we are expanding services or program spaces. This comes from ongoing conversations between the homeless serving sector and the Province, constant advocacy, and our participation in the government’s first homelessness strategy.
For the first time, the funds will position us to properly upgrade our core operations. We’ll focus our efforts on continuous improvement and doing what we do better. It means we can truly invest in the core objectives of our new strategic plan: ending homelessness, reducing harm, Truth and Reconciliation and anti-oppression, and improving our current assets – from our buildings to our fantastic staff team. Thank you, Manitoba, for believing in us and supporting our efforts!
