At approximately 3:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 1, Main Street Project staff were alerted to a fire in one of our shelter washrooms. Our staff responded immediately, using fire extinguishers to bring the fire under control. Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) team also responded quickly and supported our team in ensuring the fire was fully extinguished.
As a precaution, we briefly evacuated the shelter and supported community members in accessing other locations while the situation was addressed. Once the smoke had cleared, we were able to resume services on one side of the shelter approximately an hour later while staff worked to clean and air out the affected area. By 9:30 a.m., all regular services had been fully restored, and our shelter was operating as usual.
We are incredibly grateful to our staff for their quick response and care throughout the incident. Their quick response helped keep the damage to a minimum and, most importantly, ensured that no community members were harmed.
We also want to thank WFPS and City of Winnipeg Emergency Social Services for their prompt response and support. We are grateful to everyone who has reached out to check in and offer support. At this time, we do not need anything further, and all of our regular services are operating as normal.
